New Docuseries Episode Reveals Avicii’s Creative Process Behind “Sunset Jesus”

Released today on YouTube, the mini-documentary features archival footage of Avicii, Rami Yacoub and Gavin DeGraw during the early sessions recording the fan-favorite track.

A new episode of Stories on Stories, a YouTube docuseries about the life of Avicii, has been released today and sheds light on the making of “Sunset Jesus,” one of the most beloved tracks from the iconic EDM artist’s Stories album.

The second episode features never-before-seen studio footage of the DJ, whose real name was Tim Bergling, producing the track alongside Rami Yacoub as well as a vocal performance from singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw that helped shape its foundation. The footage offers an intimate view of the song’s early development, capturing how its tone and structure took shape before the final version was recorded.

Fans can watch Bergling and Yacoub as they experiment with its melodies and lyrics before DeGraw enters later to record vocals, though the final version would ultimately feature those of frequent Avicii collaborator Sandro Cavazza. Among the early takes is the line, “My dreams are made of gold / my heart’s been broken and I’m down along the road,” which encapsulates the track’s vulnerable optimism.

Produced by the Avicii estate and Pophouse Entertainment, Stories on Stories was launched to honor the 10th anniversary of Bergling’s prized sophomore album and his “wish that his filmed studio sessions would one day be shared with fans,” according to a press release. The first episode premiered in November and focused on the creation of “For a Better Day.” The final chapter is set to arrive on January 1st, 2026.
