Ray Volpe Unleashes Full Spectrum of Bass in Debut Album, “FOREVER, VOLPETRON”
The meticulously crafted LP cements Volpe as one of bass music’s most versatile and resilient voices.
Ray Volpe’s journey to his debut album nearly ended before it began.
A few years ago, the EDM.com Class of 2022 star considered walking away from music. Instead, he doubled down on his vision. That persistence has culminated in FOREVER, VOLPETRON, an ambitious project that distills 15 years of experimentation into his most complete work to date.
“I hope you’re able to hear 15 years of Ray Volpe in this; I wanted to make a project that epitomizes my journey,” the producer said in a press release. “From brostep, melodic dubstep and bass, heavy dubstep, bass house to everything in between, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of everything I love and everything I’ve been through.”
FOREVER, VOLPETRON opens with “FOREVER (Intro Mix),” which features an exhilarating buildup that samples many of Volpe’s most well-known songs, functioning as a sort of career retrospective. From there, the album ricochets across bass music’s many mutations. “ROCKWITIT” and “PAYBACK” showcase his bass house flair, while “Crash Out” leans fully into chaotic brostep.
Volpe’s collaborative touch is equally sharp. “DANGER” (with TYNAN), already viral thanks to support from Excision and ILLENIUM, delivers ominous, destructive energy. “WHAT’S UP” (with Virtual Riot) fuses dreamlike, video game-inspired sound design with crushing drops.
“CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR” (with Point North) and “LET IT IN” (with RUNN) forgo intensity in favor of cathartic, melodic payoffs. “AS LONG AS I GOT YOU” (with Adventure Club) bridges somber, guitar-driven lyricism with a second drop built for headbangers.
Lead-up singles like “SONG REQUEST” and “REWIND” (with Sullivan King) demonstrated the genre range within FOREVER, VOLPETRON, but the versatile album hits harder in its full form. Volpe strategically places emotional reprieves, giving us moments to breathe before plunging back into punishing drops.
The closer, “WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?,” encapsulates the album’s duality with emo-inspired vocals, euphoric melodies and one last knockout dubstep punch before fading out on anthemic optimism. It’s a fitting finale to a collection from an artist stepping fully into his prime, cementing Volpe as one of today’s most gifted producers of electronic music.
