Watch T-Pain Show Off Unreleased Dubstep Demos
T-Pain, the Auto-Tune king who once somehow made “mansion” rhyme with “Wisconsin,” is now producing dubstep music.
The Grammy-winning artist this week shared a video on his social media from a studio livestream in which he unveiled several original dubstep tracks he produced. But it’s the caption that’s sending the electronic music community into a collective frenzy: “Dubstep career soft launch?”
The video showcased T-Pain playing a pair of heavy-hitting demos for fast-rising dubstep producer Viperactive and Brian Bayati, who serves as executive producer for Shaquille O’Neal’s musical endeavors. The trio appeared to be fine-tuning several blistering beats that mark a dramatic departure from T-Pain’s smooth, vocoder-drenched anthems that once ruled the radio.

While T-Pain’s infectious hooks made him synonymous with early-2000s R&B and hip-hop, he also operated as a prolific producer. He produced a slew of his own ageless hits, including “Buy U a Drank” and “Bartender,” and every single track on each of his first three albums, Rappa Ternt Sanga, Epiphany and Three Ringz. He also crafted global hits by Britney Spears (“Hot As Ice”), Chris Brown (“Kiss Kiss”), Gym Class Heroes (“Cookie Jar”), Lil Wayne (“Got Money”) and Backstreet Boys (“International Luv”), among many others.
The response to his foray into dubstep was met with elation online.
“Well… well… well.. it’s about damn time,” commented Shaquille O’Neal, who produces dubstep under his electronic music alias, DJ Diesel.
“T-Pain + dubstep is what the world needs right now,” added dubstep superstar NGHTMRE.
T-Pain hasn’t formally announced an official release at the time of this writing.
