Watch “The Subway” by Chappell Roan
With an impressive lineup of festival appearances set for 2025. Highly anticipated headline slot at the Reading & Leeds festival and three vibrant summer sessions in Edinburgh. Therefore, it seems only natural that Chappell Roan might finally treat her dedicated fans to an official new release. Additionally, coupled with the overwhelming support she received during the 2024 “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” tour. This has undeniably catapulted her toward pop icon status. Fondly, I also, vividly recall experiencing the electrifying atmosphere when she performed “The Subway” on the opening night of her three-day showcase at London’s Brixton Academy last September. And whereby, notably, the entire audience sang along passionately, amplifying our eagerness for the song’s official drop. Thus underscoring demand for her music.
Undoubtedly, the song was a calming, reflective pause during the high-energy performance. That immediately struck a chord with fans yearning for an official release. Yet, promoting the track, Chappell has passionately expressed a journey of “solving the puzzle of how this song should resonate musically, visually, and emotionally.” Above all, Its debut reveals a profoundly vulnerable performance, enveloped in an overarching bittersweet sentiment while grappling with the nuances of heartfelt heartbreak.
Chappell shares, “The cliche of “the girl that got away’ barely scratches the surface for me with this song. I wrote it as I was stumbling around New York with a broken heart, and I kept envisioning us on every street, fire escape, coffee shop, park and yes… the subway.”
Being a pop star in high demand inevitably means that recent singles like “Good Luck, Babe!” and “The Giver” were limited only to lyric video treatments. However, stretching this format for a third consecutive release feels like a missed opportunity. Especially taking into considertation the multiple festival appearances on the horizon. Thus, to truly satisfy fans’ growing appetite for quality content, an official video release is the way to go. Directed by Amber Grace Johnson, this clip brings to life the bittersweet lyrical narrative with a captivating visual flair. Moreover, making it a compelling addition to Chappell’s body of work.
By now, it’s clear that Chappell is renown for transforming her look with every release, and this latest incarnation is no exception. Although, I was genuinely surprised to see her styled as a red-haired Cousin Itt, mooning over a similarly striking green-haired character. It’s undeniable that Chappell excels at crafting unforgettable visuals. There’s a palpable sense that she’s channelling all her creative energy into her sophomore album. And that she’s committed to taking the time necessary to perfect it. I firmly believe that when it finally arrives, it will undoubtedly blow our minds, for sure.
