‘Redneck Woman’ Put Gretchen Wilson On The Map
Even though artists tend to have a lot of hits over the course of their careers, sometimes, a single song follows an artist for their entire career. For Gretchen Wilson, this has been the case with her hit song, “Redneck Woman.” When it was released, it exploded and put Wilson on everyone’s radar. All these years later, it’s still an anthem for listeners, and a song that people still come back to.
With Gretchen Wilson surprising everyone by recently winning The Masked Singer, she has been put back in the spotlight after having to step away while dealing with illness and injury, but, she is taking full advantage of being back in the public eye in a big way.

Gretchen Wilson Says ‘Redneck’ Isn’t Racist
While many people view the term Redneck as racist or derogatory, Wilson has a completely different view of the word. In fact, she recently defended it in a big way, saying that it’s not racist at all. So, what did the original “Redneck Woman” have to say?
According to Gretchen Wilson, she said in a recent interview, “In the last 10, 20 years everybody has decided that the word ‘redneck’ means something other than what it does… I guess because I’m the redneck woman it kind of falls on me to define this for everyone.”
Wilson continued, adding, “Redneck does not mean “racist.” It does not mean some kind of “white supremacist” cult. Redneck has never meant that and I don’t know who in the movie industry or in the whatever has decided, because that’s where I hear it the most in a derogatory world, is in the movies.”

Gretchen Wilson Speaks On The True Meaning Of ‘Redneck’
This is clearly a topic that is very near and dear to Gretchen Wilson’s heart, and she had no problem recently setting the record straight. She rose to the top with her hit single, and in many ways, people consider her an authority on what being a Redneck means. For anyone unaware, Wilson had a lot more to say.
She went on to add, “Redneck means, it comes from being out in the farm, in the field, all day long, and coming back in with your neck sunburned because you’ve been out on a plow all day long. That’s basically what it comes from. And it has nothing to do with racism, and I’m really sick of it and I wish people would just do their homework on that.”
