Dolly Parton had just moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a music career when she met her future husband, Carl Dean. They met outside a laundromat and were inseparable for nearly six decades. The couple married in 1966 and were together until death literally did they part. He passed away in March at the age of 81. Now, she admits that she wasn’t honest with fans about her husband. What secret was she keeping?

Dolly Parton Reflects On Career With New Book

Dolly Parton has been involved in music for almost her whole life. She made her Grand Ole Opry when she was just 13, alongside her uncle, Bill Owens. It wasn’t the last time she performed in the famed circle. She was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1969 after the release of her second solo album.

But she’s much more than just a singer. Dolly Parton is an actress, producer, philanthropist, and icon.  Her Imagination Library helps millions of kids learn to read every year. But as she’s getting older, the performer, 79, wants to take control of her legacy.

She’s been working on multiple projects for the last few years to solidify her legacy. Her life story takes over Broadway next year. Dolly: An Original Musical makes a Nashville debut this summer before hitting the Big Apple. She was recently honored with an exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

A new book comes out in November documenting the singer’s storied career. Star of the Show: My Life on Stage is a photo book of iconic pictures from Dolly Parton’s long career. She previously released Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics in 2020, and Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones in 2023. The “9 to 5” singer teamed up with famed novelist James Patterson for the novel Run, River, Run. The 2022 book is being adapted into a movie.

She Admits She Wasn’t Honest With Fans About Husband

Throughout her career, Dolly Parton has changed with the times. But one thing that remained constant in her life was her husband, Carl Dean. He kept a quiet life and let her have the spotlight. Some fans wondered if he was even real because he was rarely seen in public.

He was real, and according to Dolly, he was wonderful. In a recent interview with The Independent, the singer revealed a secret she’d been keeping from fans for a while.

“He was ill for quite a while, and part of me was at peace that he was at peace and not suffering anymore. But that still doesn’t make up for the loss and the loneliness of it,” she said about her husband’s passing.

She said that she still feels his presence. She credited her faith for helping her through the difficult time. “I am a person of faith, and I truly believe that I’m going to see him again someday,” she confessed. Shortly after his death, the singer released a beautiful tribute song that she wrote for him. “If You Hadn’t Been There” gave Carl Dean his due credit for always supporting her.
