EMERGING ARTISTS: The Leaving – EQ Music Blog

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the CHVRCHES universe lately, you’ll know things have been surprisingly active. While the Scottish trio are back in the studio working on their fifth album. The past few years have also brought the “Screen Violence” era, the 10th-anniversary reissues of “Every Open Eye” and “The Bones of What You Believe“. Notably, also, Lauren Mayberry’s solo debut “Vicious Creature“.

However, Lauren isn’t the only member branching into new territory. Now, Martin Doherty unveils The Leaving, a brand-new project created alongside longtime CHVRCHES drummer Jonny Scott. Also it’s one you’re going to want on your radar.

Born from a period of intense personal upheaval and artistic reevaluation. The Leaving serves as a space where Martin can reconnect with the indie-rock foundations that first launched his musical journey. At the same time, Jonny Scott moves fully into the creative spotlight, transforming the longtime rhythm keeper into a co-architect of a darker, heavier sonic universe.

As a result, the pair carve out an entirely new identity. The Leaving add: ““Saved’ is a look inside the mind of someone on the verge of mental collapse. Paranoia. Hypochondria. Agoraphobia.”

Their debut track, “Saved,” arrives teeming with atmosphere. From the first pulse, it taps into a brooding energy that recalls the industrial menace of Nine Inch Nails coupled with the icy synth intensity of Depeche Mode. It’s not a sound you encounter every day. Yet it’s instantly recognisable to fans who crave that electrifying, shadow-bathed aesthetic. This is music for late nights, frayed nerves, and emotional unravelling.

According to The Leaving, the track cuts straight to the core of psychological collapse and internal distortion. It’s raw. It’s unnerving. And it’s a powerful introduction to the world Martin and Jonny are building. Where vulnerability becomes both a weapon and a refuge.

With The Leaving, Martin Doherty and Jonny Scott deliver not just a side project, but a fully formed artistic statement—dark, driving, and emotionally charged. If “Saved” is any indication, this is a project ready to resonate deeply with fans of industrial-leaning synth music and anyone drawn to the beauty in the bleak.
