The Weekly Injection: New Releases From THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, THE AVETT BROTHERS/MIKE PATTON & More Out This Week 11/14
This week’s new heavy metal releases include honking horn hardcore, World War 1 metal, well-read metalcore, and more! To the metals…
1914 – Viribus Unitus

Genre: Blackened death metal/doom
Origin: Lviv, Ukraine
Label: Napalm
Buy now on Bandcamp
Album number four from these World War 1 obsessed Ukrainians is another blackened beast. Like all their material, this one is conceptual, but most of the tracks here are a specific year, or even a specific battle. These guys clearly all got A’s in history class.
AVTT/PTTN – AVTT/PTTN

Genre: Alternative country/americana
Origin: Concord, North Carolina/Eureka, California
Label: Thirty Tigers/Ramseur Records/Ipecac Recordings
Buy now on Bandcamp
Mike Patton has dipped his toes into a number of genres. Plenty of Avant-garde jazz, Italian pop songs from the 60’s with an orchestra, and literally screaming while crushing an aluminum can. Still, when it was announced that he had joined forces with the folksy Avett Brothers, I was surprised. This is more psychedelic than I was expecting, but if you wanna hear Mike gon’ country, that’s here too.
Bell Witch & Aerial Ruin – Stygian Bough Vol. II

Genre: Doom
Origin: Seattle, Washington/Portland, Oregon
Label: Profound Lore
Buy now on Bandcamp
Five years ago Bell Witch and Aerial Ruin released the first Stygian Bough collaboration and it was a lurching, doom affair. They’re all finally back with Volume II and it is more sad, epic, dark, and beautiful shit. You now have over two ours of these acts together.
The Devil Wears Prada – Flowers

Genre: Metalcore
Origin: Dayton, Ohio
Label: Solid State
Buy now on from The Devil Wears Prada
If you’re looking for some synth-infused metalcore, look no further than album number nine from The Devil Wears Prada. Choruses are huge and melodic. This shows that twenty years into their career that they still can nail this sound.
Fallstaf – Ode To The Dead

Genre: Brass metal
Origin: Montreal, Québec
Label: Self-released
Buy now on Bandcamp
What what it sound like if you smashed Hatebreed into Reel Big Fish, you ask? What an odd question. Fallstaf are the answer though. This is hard hitting hardcore with horns blaring throughout. Can you skank and hardcore dance at the same time?
Of Mice & Men – Another Miracle

Genre: Metalcore/hard rock
Origin: Costa Mesa, California
Label: Century Media
Buy now on Bandcamp
Speaking of metalcore greats named after literature (The Devil Wears Prada was a book first…), next up is the latest from Of Mice & Men. This is also their ninth album. And they have a song on the record called “Flowers.” Weird. Like tDWP, this is super catchy, rockin’ stuff.
Stellar Circuits – Phantom :: Phoenix

Genre: Progressive/alternative metal
Origin: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Label: Nuclear Blast
Buy now on Bandcamp
You know, some weeks are for the kvlt crowd and some weeks are for the melodic folks. This week is the latter. Stellar Circuits have some Chevelle-esque atmosphere mixed with djent grooves, and tons of shredding. A really cool record mixing the modern and the classic.
Violent Vira – Lover Of A Ghost

Genre: Metalcore/alternative metal
Origin: Boise, Idaho
Label: Mom+Pop Music
Buy now from Violent Vira
Last month I went to Aftershock and one one of the days started with Violent Vira and it was a really cool live experience even though it was like 11:45 am or whatever. Really the only band I can think to compare the sound to might be Flyleaf. Pretty solid debut record.
