Watch “Love who you love” by Romy
Can you believe it’s been two years since Romy dropped her solo debut album “Mid Air“? Time really flies! I remember how much joy that whole campaign brought — every single, every heartfelt moment. So, you can imagine my excitement when she announced her brand new single, “Love Who You Love”, which is out now on all platforms.
Produced by BloodPop, Romy, and Jamie xx, this one hits deep. “Love Who You Love” radiates pure liberation, a message that feels more vital than ever. It’s euphoric, emotionally charged, and completely Romy. The track made its debut as Jack Saunders’ Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1’s New Music Show, where it was shared that she’d been holding onto the song for a while, waiting for the right moment. And now is that moment, one of celebration, empowerment, and love without boundaries.
In a beautiful nod, Romy also shouted out Chappell Roan as an inspiration, praising her for championing queer representation in pop music. This song comes from a place of community, visibility, and pride. In fact, everything I love to see (and hear) in pop right now.
Romy continues to be such a powerful voice for self-expression and connection. “Love Who You Love” is yet another shining reminder of that.
Romy explains:
“Love Who You Love is a proudly queer love song. It was important to me to acknowledge that the world is STILL such a challenging place for so many of us to show our love openly in the LGBTQ+ community. I wanted to write a song that celebrates and uplifts love and calls for change. The history of resilience and togetherness in the face of unbelievable challenges within the community is so powerful. Finding friends, family and people I look up to and learn from – through queer clubbing has made me feel so much less alone and braver in so many aspects of life.”
After confirming she’s back in the studio with The xx. Romy has shared that “Love Who You Love” acts as something of a bridge from her debut solo era, “Mid Air“. The track carries that same emotional DNA, notably heartfelt, honest, and quietly euphoric. Romy’s creative and life partner, Vic Lentaigne, once again steps behind the camera for the music video, which beautifully mirrors the visual world of “Mid Air“. Together, they capture love and connection in all their tender, cinematic glory. A touching continuation of the deeply personal storytelling Romy does so well.
Once again, Romy turns vulnerability into something luminous. A love letter to connection, wrapped in sound and feeling. It’s another glimpse into her evolving artistry, leaving us eager to see where both her solo journey and The xx reunion take her next.
