Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe Beam New Album Into Space

With support from Nobel-winning physicist Dr. Robert Wilson, the ambient “Liminal” album was transmitted from New Jersey’s Crawford Hill toward the outer reaches of deep space.

Ambient music pioneer Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe marked the arrival of their ambient album Liminal by beaming it into space using the Holmdel Horn Antenna, a Cold War-era structure that once captured the faint radiation left behind by the birth of the universe.

The broadcast took place at Crawford Hill in New Jersey with support from Nobel Prize-winning physicist Dr. Robert Wilson, who originally used the antenna in 1964 to detect the cosmic microwave background and provide key evidence for the Big Bang theory. Wolfe previously broadcast her 2019 album Raw Space using the same antenna, continuing a fascination with sending music beyond human reach.

This time, the signal carried no remnants of the past. It instead transmitted sound shaped for the future, a full-length album built around imagined worlds and atmospheric synthscapes. Released on October 10th, Liminal is the final entry in a trilogy released on Verve Records following Luminal and Lateral, which the artists respectively describe as “dream music” and “space music.”

Liminal dwells somewhere between Lateral and Luminal, but also in its own place entirely,” the duo said in a press release. “It feels like the beginning of exploring a new terrain of music that is about future landscapes, environmental spaces and atmospheres, that a human presence (of sorts) occasionally floats in and out of.”

The release includes recent singles “Ringing Ocean,” “The Last to Know” and “Procession,” the lattermost of which arrived alongside a new video directed by Orfeo Tagiuri.
