CoKi Shares “Crystal Lake” EP Featuring Unreleased Tracks from 2003 to 2006
The iconic London-based label Tempa Recordings featured the EP as the debut offering in their “Tempa. Archive” series.
One of the most important labels in the history of dubstep has dug into the archive to share unreleased tracks from a pioneer of the genre, CoKi.
Out now on Tempa Recordings is Crystal Lake, a six-track EP produced by the pioneering dubstep producer between 2003-2006 that remained unreleased until now. Low-quality versions of these tracks could be found online in playlists featuring ripped audio, but now longtime fans of the genre can share the foundational sounds with the next generation of listeners.
“Super LFO” lives up to its name with deep, intense bass and resonant production. The long-awaited “Gotham” features a haunting, whispering intro before a dramatic pause gives way to wobbling bass that knocks you out of your seat. Another fan-favorite, “Chalice,” brings crystalline keys into the mix for a sparkling dubstep track.
The titular “Crystal Lake” removes any sort of sparkle found on the previous track and fills the mix with plenty of grime. “Not Today” is a more upbeat offering featuring bold, in-your-face synths with a subtle, deep bassline before “Heartless Ninja” closes on a high note with a bouncy rhythm that complements the waxing and waning production around it.
