Tim McGraw has the best job in the world right now – country music superstar. But he looked back on early in his career and revealed how he lost a gig because of singer Kenny Chesney.

What happened?

Tim McGraw Credits Mom For Success

Tim McGraw had his big breakthrough with the album Not A Moment Too Soon. The album had a few songs that reached the charts but the heartfelt song “Don’t Take The Girl” gave the singer his first number one song. It definitely wasn’t his last. He released the song “Purple Umbrellas” earlier this year. He collaborated with Parker McCollum on the song.

The singer recently chatted with his label, Big Machine Label Group, about his early career and what inspired him the most. Many people are familiar with the singer’s famous father, baseball great Tug McGraw. But Tim McGraw credits his mom for his work ethic.

“You know, my mom worked three jobs with us growing up, and was in some abusive relationships. She really worked hard and really instilled a sense of belief in ourself, and to dream and to always go for stuff,” he said.

Before he made it big in country music, Tim McGraw was an up-and-coming singer in Nashville. He recalled how he used to perform next to a hot dog stand with Tracy Lawrence, and Kenny Chesney.

Unfortunately, they all lost their jobs because of Kenny Chesney. “And I think Kenny got us fired because there were clown heads on the trash cans, and our job at the end of the night when we finished singing, we were supposed to take the clown heads, run a chain through ‘em and lock ‘em up. And I think Kenny didn’t do it one night and they got stolen, and we got fired,” Tim McGraw said.

All three singers are now famous enough to own the hot dog stand.

His music career led to Tim McGraw getting several acting roles. He starred alongside his wife, Faith Hill, on the Paramount Plus limited series 1883.

I wouldn’t have been able to get into acting without having some hit records first, I guess. But acting’s hard. It’s not easy. People think that it’s easy, and it’s not. When you’re on set and the cameras start rolling and you’re standing there with some legends that you’re having to act with, it can tighten you up just a little bit,” he said about his acting career.

As for his favorite job before he was a singer, he had several bad jobs. But he said the worst was picking tomatoes in Louisiana.

“I had a lot of bad jobs. Picking tomatoes is a pretty nasty job. Pulling coffee weeds in rice fields is not a good job either, especially with water moccasins everywhere,” the “I Like It, I Love It” singer said about his life before fame.
