Watch “Lucid Dreaming” by joan

I can’t help but feel a twinge of regret for not paying closer attention to joan, the remarkable Little Rock, Arkansas duo comprised of Alan Benjamin Thomas and Steven Rutherford. This neglect feels like a significant oversight, especially considering how much I’ve savoured their irresistible blend of alternative pop. Their music is a captivating tapestry woven with earnest lyricism, showcasing the emotional vulnerability of these incredibly talented musicians. Each note resonates with sincerity, inviting listeners into an intimate experience that’s truly special.

It’s hard to believe how much I’ve missed since joan unveiled their stunning debut album “Superglue” in 2023. As fate would have it, they are now fully immersed in a vibrant promotional campaign for their eagerly anticipated sophomore album “this won’t last forever,” releasing on September 25th. With an enticing array of teaser tracks leading up to the album, I find myself thrilled to rekindle my admiration for joan, particularly with their captivating new single “Lucid Dreaming.”

In their latest foot-tapper, joan masterfully captures the essence of a relationship that feels almost dreamlike. The experience evokes a profound sense of derealization, where the unfolding moments seem tantalizingly detached from reality. It’s reminiscent of the disorienting effects of overthinking. Like when our minds weave intricate narratives that blur the lines between what truly is and what we merely imagine. This captivating exploration draws listeners into a world where love and illusion intertwine beautifully.

joan says of “Lucid Dreaming“…

“Ultimately, it’s an encouragement to take advantage of the moments you have, and not to overthink it too much, because this won’t last forever.”

Joan masterfully crafts storyboard-style music videos, and their latest creation for “Lucid Dreaming,” directed by Edward Crockett, is no exception. The duo is portrayed in a captivatingly disillusioned state, gliding through the monotony of daily life while appearing delightfully disconnected from their surroundings. The tantalising question hangs in the air: will they awaken to reality before the video reaches its poignant conclusion?

Much like joan’s impeccably crafted alternative pop melodies, this video takes viewers on an enthralling quest for answers. It’s undoubtedly a far more enchanting way to spend three minutes than mundanely waiting for a kettle to boil on our tea-break.
