“There are some people just born beautiful, and then if they add more stuff, they’re just more beautiful. But then there are people, like me, that you just try to make the most of what you got,” she said.
The “9 to 5″ singer said she wears high heels to make up for being short. Her hair was damaged from all the teasing and bleach, so she wears wigs. She said that her outlandish outfits make her “outgoing and more friendly and more accessible” to her fans.

Dolly Parton’s humble upbringing is well-documented. She grew up poor, living in a one-room cabin with her parents and eleven siblings. The rural home didn’t have any running water or heat. How she grew up is part of the reason why Dolly Parton uses her wealth to help others.
The singer never lost sight of where she came from despite her monumental success. She still lives by the advice her mother gave her when she was growing up. Her mama’s advice was a six-word quote from the famous Shakespeare play “Hamlet.”
“To thine own self be true.”
“There’s a whole lot of meaning in that phrase,” Dolly Parton said about the well-known quote. In fact, the advice she gives other people now is similar to what her mother always told her.
What Advice She Gives People
According to Dolly Parton, people can stay true to themselves by always remembering “your rules, your personality, your mindset, your faith.”
The entertainment icon stressed the importance of a purpose.“Find out who you are and do it on purpose. And do it with purpose,” Parton advises. “You got to know who you are because so many people try to emulate or copy somebody else,” she told TODAY.
Many people have tried to copy her over the years but there’s only one Dolly Parton. She accepted long ago that fame comes with sacrifices. However, there has to be a line.
“Don’t ever sacrifice who you are, your principles and your morals and your values to just try to get ahead in business. It ain’t worth it,” she advised. If anyone knows about getting ahead in the business, it’s Dolly Parton.
