Emmy Russell’s American Idol Journey
Emmy Russell made headlines last year for her American Idol audition. She revealed to the judges that she’s the granddaughter of country music icon Loretta Lynn. But the young singer was determined to make her own way and not rely on her family name. During her time on the ABC singing competition, she performed several original songs, as well as taking on her grandmother’s famous song “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
Despite massive support from fans, Emmy Russell only made it to the Top 5 on American Idol. After she was eliminated, she opened up about how grateful she was for the opportunity. Then she went back to her ‘normal’ life as a young mother, wife, and aspiring musician.

Emmy Russell opened for up-and-coming singer Megan Moroney for a few tour stops earlier this year. Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter continues to make music, often with her singer-songwriter husband, Tyler Ward. She’s also been known to collaborate with Willie Nelson’s son, Lukas Nelson.
She Leaves Special Message For ‘Memaw’ Loretta Lynn
Emmy Russell affectionately called her grandmother “Memaw.” Loretta Lynn sadly passed away in 2022 amid health issues at the age of 90. Her granddaughter found a special way not only to honor her “Memaw,” but for others to honor their loved ones, too.
She took to social media to share a clip of a new song she’s releasing this week, “Phone Call to Heaven.” A special phone number was created in collaboration with the song. Anyone who calls the number can leave a voicemail for their loved one. Emmy Russell asked fans to record themselves leaving the voicemail. The videos will be included in a music video for the song.
The singer filmed herself calling the number and leaving a message for Loretta Lynn. “Hey, Memaw, I really wish that you could meet my daughter. I think you would love her,” she said to her grandmother as tears welled in her eyes.
She added, “I’m so happy that you’re in a place that you don’t feel alone, and you’re just no longer sick anymore. I love you so much. I miss you so much.”
Fans In Tears
The loss of Loretta Lynn was difficult for the country music community, her fans, and most of all, her beloved family. The idea of leaving a voicemail for a late loved one had many of Emmy Russell’s social media followers in tears.
- “This is so beautiful! It made me cry!”
- “Just left a message for my dad. Now I’m bawling.”
- “I’m bawling just watching this clip.”
- “oh gosh. This is heartbreakingly beautiful. I’d say hi to my 4 sweet babies in heaven. That would be a very hard video to do”
- “Got me crying in the middle of the day”
- “Why am I sobbing so uncontrollably over a clip of this song!!!”
One fan wrote that everyone in the world must have called the line because it was busy when they tried. Call 615-249-8476 to leave a voicemail for your loved one in Heaven. It’s not required to video the call, but if you do record it, you could end up in the music video.
