George Jones had one of country music’s most recognizable voices. His career accomplishments were almost overshadowed by his real-life antics. He passed away nearly 15 years ago. In a new interview, his widow opened up about his shocking final moments.

George Jones Credited For Greatest Country Song Ever Recorded

George Jones had countless hits in his long career. His career began in the 50s when he signed with Starday Records and released “Why Baby Why.” The song became the first hit of many. With the popularity of Elvis Presley, George Jones released several “rockabilly” songs, which he later said in his memoir that he regretted.

After changing labels, he returned to his country roots. His first number one hit single, “White Lightnin’” was a mix of both genres. He continued to release new music but hit a downturn in the 1970s. He recovered in the 1980s with what is arguably his most popular song. Some might say “He Stopped Loving Her Today” is the greatest country song ever recorded. Alan Jackson performed the song at George Jones’ funeral.

He Died In 2013

The real life of George Jones was like every country song come to life. He was famously married four times. His third marriage was to country star Tammy Wynette. They were married from 1969 until 1975. The couple recorded several studio albums together. Their highly successful duets earned them the nickname The President and First Lady of Country Music.

But their marriage wasn’t great outside of the recording studio. According to multiple sources, George Jones was drinking and doing drugs a lot during that time period. His marriage to Tammy Wynette was turned into a TV mini-series in 2022. George & Tammy is available to stream on Hulu.

However, his fourth wife, Nancy Sepulvado, gives herself credit for the singer quitting alcohol. They were married from 1983 until he passed away. She told The Tennessean that she was led to the singer by a higher power to help him kick the habit.

George Jones was still touring up until the time of his death. He fell ill after a performance in Knoxville, Tennessee, on April 6. “He Stopped Loving Her Today” was the last song he ever performed. The singer was rushed to the hospital after the concert. After six days in the ICU, the “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me” singer passed away from respiratory failure on April 26, 2013, at the age of 81.

According to his wife, he knew his time was up. “I just did my last show… and I gave ’em hell,” he allegedly said in the hospital.

His Widow Shares Singer’s Shocking Final Moments

George Jones was a deeply religious man. Based on the shocking final moments she witnessed, his wife, Nancy Sepulvado, firmly believes the singer went to Heaven.

She opened up about his final moments to The Tennessean. She said that he was taking his last breaths when his eyes opened up. Despite the doctor trying to hold her back, his wife got close enough to hear his final words.

“Well hello there. I’ve been looking for you. My name’s George Jones,” he said in his final moments on Earth.

His wife believes he was talking to God after arriving in Heaven.
